Baseball Splits First Two Games With West Ottawa

The Scots traveled out to the lakeshore yesterday afternoon to face West Ottawa for their first series of the home stretch of the conference season. In game one, the Fighting Scots offense was kept in check in game one as the Panthers took game one 4-1. The Scots and Panthers were both held scoreless until the fourth inning. West Ottawa scored their four runs in the fourth off of a walk, two singles and a triple. Caledonia scored their lone run in the top of the sixth after AJ Szabo was able to draw a walk and advance to third on a fielding error. Corbin Raffler was able to score Szabo off of a sac fly. Senior Aaron Hileman got the start in game one for Caledonia. The Lefty pitched three and two/thirds innings allowing four runs, four walks and striking out four. AJ Szabo, Micheal Douglass and Jace Lawton each had one hit. In game two, the Scots offense got things rolling early and often as they rolled to a 10-3 win over the Panthers. In the top of the first inning, Caledonia looked to be held scoreless in the top of the first after a fly out and a ground out quickly gave the Scots two outs. Derek Pennington and Micheal Douglass were both able to reach base on a single and an error. Tommy Clarey was able to score Pennington with a base hit to center. An error by West Ottawa scored the second and third runs for the Scots. Another error by the Panthers gave the Scots their fourth and fifth runs. Caledonia and West Ottawa were both held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when West Ottawa was able to score their first run off of a double and an error. The Panthers were not done in the fourth as they cut the lead down to two from a fielder's choice, walk and hit by pitch. The Fighting Scots responded with two runs to extend their lead to 7-3 in the top of the fifth. Tommy Clarey was able to start the inning off with a walk and Jace Lawton was able to advance him to third on a double. A single by sophomore Cam Myers and a sac bunt by sophomore AJ Roszowski were able to score runs six and seven. The offense kept going in the sixth when Derek Pennington ripped a double that was able to score Corbin Raffler. Micheal Douglass loaded the bases when he reached on an error. A sac fly by Tommy Clarey and a single by Nick Slater gave the Scots runs nine and ten. Micheal Douglass got the start for the Scots in game two. The senior threw three and a third innings allowing one run, no walks, five hits and striking out one. Nick Slater came in in relief as he threw three and two thirds innings, allowing no runs and striking out six. Junior Corbin Raffler and Sophomore Cam Myers each had two hits to lead Cal.
