The Cold Weather did not Cool Down the Scots Bats as they Took Game 1 From EK 9-3

It was a cold, brisk and windy afternoon yesterday afternoon at the Cal Baseball field as the Scots defeated the Falcons 9-3. East Kentwood got things started early in the top of the first after a walk and a single. EK took a 1-0 lead on a double by their number three batter. A strikeout by starter Aaron Hileman and back to back fly outs ended the threat for the Falcons. Caledonia was able to get the bases loaded in the bottom of the first but failed to score. East Kentwood extended their lead to 2-0 after an error on a dropped third strike was able to score a runner from third. Junior Corbin Raffler was able to get things started in the bottom of the second with a double to right field. Raffler was then able to score on a base hit from fellow junior AJ Szabo. East Kentwood and Caledonia were held scoreless in the third inning. Starter Aaron Hileman was able to strike out the side in the top of the fourth on only twelve pitches. In the bottom of the fourth the tides started to change in favor of Caledonia. A single by Corbin Raffler and a walk by Drew Drennan found the Scots with runners on first and second and no outs. AJ Szabo got the bases loaded when he reached on an error by the Kentwood first baseman. Caledonia tied the game at two as the Scots still had no outs. A single by Nick Slater gave the Scots a 3-2 lead. Caledonia extended the lead to 4-2 when Derek Pennington was able to each on an error. Senior Mitchell Smith blew the game wide open when he was able to triple in the gap in center to score both Pennington and Slater. Caledonia build a 9-2 lead at the end of the fourth. East Kentwood was able to close the gap to 9-3 on single in the top of the seventh. But Caledonia was able to hang on and take the game one victory 9-3. Senior Aaron Hileman got the start for Caledonia. The lefty went 6 innings allowing one run, one walk and striking out ten. Mitchell Smith came in in the seventh to record the save. Smith did allow one run but was able to shutdown Kentwood. Junior Corbin Raffler went 2 for 2 on the day with a RBI and a walk. Caledonia is back in action today for a doubleheader against Wayland.
