Softball Drops Opening Game of Mattawan Invitational

A seventh inning walk-off left the FFighting Scots on the wrong end of a 10-9 defeat to Mattawan on Saturday. Caledonia started the scoring in the top of the first on a lead off home run by Sophomore Addy Lash. Junior Kala Bisterfeldt followed with a triple as the Scots looked alive and awake early on. The Scots second run was scored when Jaz Dana flew out to to right field scoring Bisterfeldt. Back to back groundouts ended the top of the first. Mattawan was able to score one run in the bottom of inning number one. Both teams were held scoreless through the next two innings. In the top of the fourth, Alexis Elliot was able to score Keira Sundstrom off of a fly ball double to center field. Junior Payton Brenner was able to safely reach base and advance Elliot to third after an error by the Mattawan third baseman. A double by Addy Lash was able to score Elliot. A walk by Bisterfeldt was able to load the bases for the Scots with only one out. A groundout by Dana scored Brenner to give Caledonia a 5-1 lead. The Wildcats offense shined in the bottom of the fourth scoring eight runs. The inning was highlighted by five singles and a three run homerun. The Scots offense was not done yet. Caledonia was able to score runs in the fifth and six by a Avery Hallo steal and Addy Lash’s second homerun. The Fighting Scots found themselves trailing 9-7 heading into the stop of the seventh. Senior Mckenize Parker and sophomore Malia Burke both reached base to start the seventh. Avery Hallo was able to advance both runners on a groundout. Caledonia tied the game when Gracie Siekman singled to right. Both Parker and Burke were able to score. Sophomore Molly Lieske started things for Caledonia. The hurler went three and two-thirds innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits and striking out two. Addy Olin was credited with the loss as she threw three innings out of the bullpen. Caledonia tallied 12 hits on the day. Addy Lash, Grace Siekman, Molly Lieske, and Kala Bisterfeldt each had multiple hits for Caledonia Varsity Fighting Scots. Lash led Caledonia Varsity Fighting Scots with three hits in four at bats, including two home runs and theee RBIs.
