Scots bump line-up around for wins over Sailors and Bucs

The Fighting Scots finagled their line-up a bit. It made things tougher on freshman Crue Gardner, but in the end things turned out better on the scoreboard than the Caledonia varsity wrestling team was expecting in an OK Green Conference dual with visiting Mona Shores Wednesday. The Fighting Scots topped the Sailors 57- 17, bumping up a bunch in the lightweights to get the absolute best match-ups to score a bunch of points. Caledonia is now 1-1 in OK Green Conference duals on the season, and they added a win over Grand Haven on the evening as well – one head coach Shawn Veitch told his guys beforehand that he was really looking forward to as he hadn’t ever beaten the Buccaneers in a dual in either of his stints leading the program. The Scots pulled out a 42-33 win over the Grand Haven squad. The line-up shuffling for the Fighting Scots in the dual with Mona Shores had Max Schnurstein, who has competed at 126 pounds most of the winter, drop down to the 120-pound bout. Gardener filled in at 126 pounds, and coach Veitch had guys like Escher Reeder, Shawn Restau, Robert Restau and Ben Moss move up a weight class. It worked out there in the six bouts between 120 pounds and 150. Schnurstein got a pin at 120, and Shawn and Robert Restau scored pins at 138 and 144 respectively. Moss added a pin at 150 pounds. In the 132-pound match, Reeder outscored the Sailors’ Cordyn Twinning 6-1. Gardner had the chance to take on Mona Shores’MarioCurielinthe126-poundbout. Curiel, who is ranked among the best in the state at his weight class, bumped his record to 21-0 on the season with a 15-0 technical fall. The Scots also had pins from Caleb VanLaan at 106 pounds and David Tiers at 190 pounds in the dual. Koleson Reeder outscored Mona Shores’ Brody Faught 7-1 at 165 pounds and Ky Spencer scored a 5-4 win over the Sailors’ Anthony Nash in the 285-pound bout. Cayden Nostrant and Egan Otto had forfeit wins for the Scots too. “I did not have it scored out that way. Mona has been having a great season,” Veitch said. “They have been wrestling really, really tough. I thought it was going to be more like a 12-point dual, but our kids they just came out on fire.” The Scots kept their line-up adjustments for the dual with the Buccaneers. Schnurstein, Robert Restau, Tiers and Xavier Stewart had pins in that win for the Scots. Reeder won a technical fall 126; Owen Rounds took an 8-6 win over Grand Haven’s Bradley Howard at 132 pounds; and Reeder won by a major decision at 157 for the Scots. Nostrant had another forfeit win at 175 too. Spencer got off to a 19-0 start to the season at heavyweight for the Scots, but was bested 6-5 in his bout with the Buccaneers’ Louie Vargo late in the dual. Vargo jumped to 23-3 on the season with the win. Veitch is looking forward to his guys starting to ramp up to be at their peak as the state postseason gets underway in February, but he’s still looking for the best way to get them there–whether it is time to push harder or back off a bit for some conditioning and recovery. x Pause Unmute Fullscreen Now Playing x video of: Nebraska football beefs up the offensive line, plus Fred Hoiberg's signature winPlay Video Nebraska football beefs up the offensive line, plus Fred Hoiberg's signature win Watch on Video channel logo Nebraska football beefs up the offensive line, plus Fred Hoiberg's signature win “The kids that are listening while they’re wrestling, having that coachability, and the kids that are doing the techniques we’re learning up in the room are really starting to take off and starting to soar,” Veitch said. Caledonia breezed to a championship at its own Caledonia Duals last Saturday, Jan. 10, going 5-0 with overwhelming wins over Northview, Loy Norrix, Portage Northern, Vicksburg and Wyoming. The Scots scored at least 60 points in every dual and more than 70 in three of them. The closest contest of the day for the Scots was a 62-18 win over Loy Norrix. The Scots had 11 guys go undefeated on the day, and Veitch said it was a good day of JV and girls’ wrestling at the high school too.
