Coming out of the Labor Day break, Byron High School’s volleyball team focused on establishing a foundation for the future in Tuesday night’s match against Durand. Although Byron fell in three sets 25-11, 25-11 and 27-25 the third set offered an encouraging glimpse of the team’s potential. After struggling to find a rhythm early, Byron settled in and pushed Durand beyond the regulation 25 points before narrowly dropping the final set. Haerin Whitehead led Byron’s attack with seven kills and added five digs. Sierra Flannery recorded five assists, while Delilah Mishler, Claire Murphree and Kendall White each contributed six digs. Byron finished with 39 digs as a team, and five different players Flannery, Laney Eberly, Whitehead, Makenna Zervan and Piersyn Vroman recorded a service ace. The result was not what Byron hoped for, but the team’s improved play in the third set provided something positive to build upon. With a clearer sense of what it can accomplish when playing in rhythm, Byron will look to carry that momentum into its next match.
