Braves Trounce Titans for First Win of Campaign

Well, the Danville Curse* is broken. For the first time in 344 days, since the miracle finish to last year's 50-49 overtime win in the 4A Sectional opening round over Danville, Brebeuf won a football game, scoring on their first six possessions in a 42-7 blowout at Arsenal Tech. Carter Cosgrove threw five touchdown passes, three to Edwin Watson III, as Brebeuf scored on its first three plays from scrimmage in a 28-0 first quarter, and never looked back. Those three plays- Cosgrove's 45-yard pass to Nate Johnson, Cosgrove's 16-yard pass to Watson, and Zion Crowe's 19 yard TD run- all followed Tech miscues of one kind or another giving the Braves a short field, but no apologies. No football team in Indy was more owed a game like this by the Football Karma gods than 0-6 Brebeuf. The Brebeuf defense combined for seven tackles for loss, holding Tech to just 87 yards on 35 plays. Matthew Johnson's six solos and Parker Maiers five led the varsity, while Raymond Neely was frisky with the second teamers in the second half, leading them with five solos of his own. Maiers, who does everything for Brebuef, returned the opening kickoff 40 yards and had two carries for 35 yards, including a 23-yard run that was essentially an audition tape for the leading role in The Larry Czonka Story. Oh, and he blocked a punt. No biggie. Just another Friday for the Dartmouth-bound middle child of the Maiers football family. It should be a happier locker room after practices this week as Brebeuf gets ready to host Bloomington South and hopefully start a winning streak. Go Braves! *Disclaimer: It's unclear if anybody from Danville really practices witchcraft, or whether there was an actual 'curse' placed on Brebeuf's football team following last year's sectional victory over the Warriors ...only that some loud cursing was heard from Danville fans as they exited the stadium.
