Braves Drop Third Straight to Open Season, 32-21 to Lafayette Harrison

Lafayette Harrison senior QB Lannon Nicoloff threw three TD passes and ran for a fourth, helping his team pull away from visiting Brebeuf for a 32-21 victory, dropping the Braves to 0-3 on the young season. Brebeuf led the game 7-6 at halftime, as junior Carter Cosgrove, in his sixth-ever snap as a varsity quarterback, ran 77 yards for a second quarter touchdown to give the Braves their first lead in a football game since October 25, 2024, when Joe Biden was president and Finn Scroggins, of all people, stepped in at QB to hand the ball off to CJ Harris, who then scored the final touchdown in a 50-49 Sectional victory over Danville that will live forever in Brebeuf lore. I mention that because the phrase, "stepped in at QB" may be one that defines this 2025 Braves team, a team that is now 0-3 headed into the meat of their schedule. Cosgrove was one of four QBs that played a role in Friday night's loss: *The first was Braves junior Keegan Bouwkamp, the Zionsville transfer that came here to drive the Ferrari that is Matt Geske's offense. Bouwkamp looked the part in week one against North Central, throwing 45 passes with no interceptions and a pair of touchdowns to Cosgrove. Keegan was on the sidelines at Harrison with his foot in a cast, four pins mending the ankle he broke at North Central, an injury he's hoping to heal in time to yet play this year. (Ferraris, after all, are pretty fun to drive when you're 17.) *The second was Bouwkamp's backup, junior Dylan Rogers, who started last week against Tri-West, and certainly showed flashes, leading his team back in the second half of a 47-29 loss. Rogers got the start against Harrison, but didn't play after throwing a pick-six late in the first half that drew Harrison to within a point at the break. *Which brings us to Cosgrove, the junior from Carmel, who would probably have been happy enough to be one of Bouwkamp's favorite targets this year, but who instead received baptism under fire playing QB in a road game against a 6A opponent, going 10 for 17 for 123 yards and a nifty back-corner touchdown pass to Edwin Watson. That was nice. Cosgrove also ran for two scores, and was Brebeuf's leading rusher with 85 yards. That was nice, too. But perhaps the moment of Carter Cosgrove's debut at QB that most impressed was midway through the fourth quarter, when he was completely trucked by blitzing Raider linebacker Clayton Daubenmier. The crowd gasped at the ferocity of the sack, and for a moment we were all Mrs. Cosgrove, hiding our eyes behind our fingers. Driving a Ferrari can be terrifying. Carter, however, held on to the ball, bounced up, went to the sidelines, and on their next possession, led the Braves on their final scoring drive, 61 yards in seven plays with the corner pass to Watson for Brebeuf's third touchdown. *All of this was watched by the fourth QB in our story, Purdue sophomore WR Nolan Buckman, who was in attendance Friday night at Harrison. Buckman was the last QB to take Brebeuf to a state finals appearance, as a junior in 2021, Geske's second year as Braves coach. Nolan has already seen two coaching staffs as a Boilermaker, but has put in the work to stick on the Boilermakers as a slot receiver. Lots of work. Hard work. Like the hard work that lies ahead for this talented Brebeuf team and its coaching staff, who will look for their first win of the season next Friday night at home against Circle City Conference opponent Guerin Catholic. Come cheer your Braves to their first win of the season!
